Ads on the BBS?

Ads on the BBS? - 07/08/2004 11:49

Greetings!

I thought I had my ad-aware and spybot up to date...

Is anyone else seeing a one line text ad for Yahoo's "Picture What Matters Contest" above the general post frame? Has it always been there and I was just automatically ignoring it?

I see no ads (though I would have no complaint if Tom ever felt he needed to add something inobtrusive like Google Adsense to the bottom of the page).

It is only on the main index page. Just curious - it is extremely unobtrusive. This is probably why I never noticed it before...

It's there for me as well. That's funny though because I have never noticed it, and doubt I ever would have unless you pointed it out! Talk about very unobtrusive.

Yep I've got it too. I've been having HUGE problems with Cool Web Search recently, not sure if that has anything to do with it???

Cheers

Cris.

Edit - Got it with both IE6 and Firefox.

Tom just added the ad in the last day or two, that's why you're just starting to notice it. Because it's a simple text ad not hosted by a 3rd party, it's extremely unlikely to get caught by your anti-adware programs.

Re: Ads on the BBS? - 07/08/2004 16:52

As long as it is officially sanctioned. I had never noticed it, so it was more a curiousity than anything else.

Edit: Tom - do you get any bonuses (or cash) for clicks, page views or the like???

Re: Ads on the BBS? - 07/08/2004 17:53

Somehow Opera doesn't display the ad.
Out of curiousity I opened the BBS in IE and now it's there.

Seen on the Main Index page using Netscape 4.75; but I guess we all know it's legit now.

Tom, is there a story behind the link? Any cool reason that we should check it out? Haha, dare I venture into Off Topic to find the answers to these questions?

Why would any one particpate in this?

I took a look at the Official Rules. You have to be considered an amature photog. No Pro's allowed, but you have to conduct your self as a pro would by obtaining signed releases from the subjects of the pictures. You have to give away all rights to the photos, but keep all the liabilitys related to its use. If you are fortunate enough to win. You get a cell phone. Some charity gets 10k. and Yahoo gets a tax deduction.

F. grants to Sponsor and its affiliates, legal representatives, assigns and licensees, all right, title and interest in and to the Entry Materials, including the right and permission to copyright (as appropriate), reproduce, encode, store, copy, transmit, publish, broadcast, display, publicly perform, exhibit and/or otherwise use or reuse (without limitation as to when or to the number of times used), the entrant’s name, address (city and state only), image, voice, likeness, statements, biographical material and Entry Materials, including, but not limited to, the video or digital recording and performances that may be contained in any of the above items (in each case, as may be edited by Sponsor, in Sponsor’s sole discretion), as well as any additional photographic images, video images, portraits, interviews or other materials relating to the entrant and arising out of his/her participation in this competition (with or without using the entrant’s name) (collectively, the "Additional Materials") in any media throughout the world for advertising and publicity purposes without additional review, compensation, or approval;

G. forever waives any rights of publicity, rights of privacy, intellectual property rights, and any other legal or moral rights that might preclude Yahoo!'s use of the entrant's Entry Materials or the Additional Materials or require the entrant's permission for Yahoo! to use them for promotional purposes, and agrees to never sue or assert any claim against the Promotion Entities relating to the Promotion Entities' use of those Materials; and

Fan-bloody-tastic.

Or I could call AT&T and threaten to switch to Verizon and they'd offer me a new 'phone in a heartbeat.

Re: Ads on the BBS? - 09/08/2004 02:51

I got a new phone because the company that my brother works for had a contract through someone who went bankrupt, and their phones became useless to them. Their loss is my gain...

and a two year contract to go with it

Well, the contest is about "social issues that matter", so having the cash go to a charity is, IMHO, in-line with the theme of the contest. And, before I get cynical about Yahoo getting the tax-break, I'd want to find out if Yahoo donates the money in Yahoo's name, or in the winner's name, in which case the winner gets a cell phone, and a tax deduction, while the charity gets 10k, and Yahoo gets publicity, a bunch of crappy camera-phone pictures to wade through, and little else. (The rules just say "from the Sponsor", but don't specify on who's behalf the donation is being made on.)

Re: Ads on the BBS? - 11/08/2004 03:22

Thinking twice about it, let Yahoo have the tax deduction. I'd have to claim the 10k as income, and pay taxes on it, before the IRS would let me have the deduction for the same. Net loss.
