Sad empeg day

Sad empeg day - 07/09/2012 12:31

I just uninstalled my Empeg sled and amp from my Subaru frown

I'm not using the car much (mainly use Eryl's Passat which isn't Empeg friendly) and the Empeg even less. I probably haven't taken the Empeg with me for about 18 months.

One of the reasons I haven't been using it is that it has an annoying intermittent buzzing that is probably a poor connection in the sled. I never got round to sorting that out.

The main reason however is that I have all my music and probably more importantly, my podcasts, in my pocket all the time. Having a separate box that I need to sync music onto doesn't seem to make much sense any more.

The Subaru currently has a radio/cassette unit fitted back into it, as I'm thinking of selling it. If I hang onto it much longer I'll fit a cheap Bluetooth head unit.

I'm hanging onto all my Empeg kit though (~4 sleds, 3 Empegs, several tuners and a remote mounting kit). I can envisage a time in future when I've got a nice* car that I might spend the time to get an empeg mounted along with a Bluetooth box plugged into the aux.

Depending on how old the Passat is, it's not much problem to install the empeg in a Passat. I have a 2006 model and I have installed an empeg (and a Pioneer headunit) in mine.

Compared to not installing it however is a massive hassle wink

I really can't be arsed I'm afraid.

I feel your pain, as I just went through this a few weeks ago, and just got my new car on Monday. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend.

I have to deal with the greater pain of getting rid of the car at some point soon, probably...

I've owned two cars in my life and I still own both of them. I bought the MX-5 from new, it is now 15 years old and has done 150,000 miles. I've had the Impreza for 7 years and done 120,000 miles in it. They are both sad and tatty looking (and less than entirely reliable).

I really should get rid of both of them, but given they are the only two cars I have ever owned I am stupidly emotionally attached to them frown

I feel your pain - finally got rid of the Impreza a couple of months ago - to get Claire a Honda Jazz :-/

Had it for 10 years and did about 150k miles in it - was great fun, but it was getting too expensive to maintain.

Still have the Forester though, so all is not lost...

On a happier note, I'm finally INSTALLING my empeg and new JVC headunit into my Volvo V70.

I tore out the empeg and Alpine probably two years ago in order to replace the Alpine with a unit that supported A2DP stereo Bluetooth streaming so I could play podcasts from my phone. After simply listening to the podcasts via headphones for all that time, I've finally soldered up the wiring harness and begun installing the decks back into my car.

Though my empeg currently shows "no hard disk found" errors, I'll soon fix that and have it running again. I use it for non-time-sensitive podcasts like Car Talk. All time-sensitive podcasts are automatically managed on my phone. So, I haven't heard Car Talk in probably two years since my empeg has been down. But it's coming back! I'll post pictures when it's done.

Subaru's seem to be a popular place to fit empegs.
I too have one in my Impreza, 14yrs old and still going.

That's about how much unlistened Car Talk I've got backlogged on my Empeg right now... :-)

I just got rid of my Rodeo of 11 years as well. The car was a real POS, but the Empeg made always made it exciting to drive. It really made me sad as I was removing the sled from the car.

The new car is a BMW X5 and I have fitted the OEM stereo with an aftermarket bluetooth/aux/ipod box. I was thinking I could just use my ipod in it, but truthfully, I can't fkn stand the way ipod/apple chose to organize playlists. I am well used to having my playlists exactly how I wish. So...

I'm working on putting my Empeg back in the car where it belongs, though not in the dash. I've decided to get creative with it and will post the results on the bbs soon.

Cheers

I just sold my Volvo 240 I've had for the last 16 years. I sold it with the empeg installed, the guy was really interested in it.

Subaru here too. The car is two years older than the Empeg unit (Mk.2a) but both have a special place in our hearts. Couldn't bear to part with either.
