Washington DC Empeg Get together

Washington DC Empeg Get together - 07/06/2001 19:06

Let's try this one more time:
July 28th (a Saturday), Northern Virginia area (perhaps Fair Oaks Mall).
Don't like the time, suggest another one.
Got a better idea for a meeting place, suggest it.
Time to get this idea to gell folks!

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 08/06/2001 06:10

That sounds good to me! As far as I know (which isn't much), I don't have anything to do that day.

As for Fair Oaks mall, I don't mind the distance, but finding a suitable area to blast car stereos with sufficient room might be tough. are there parking lots outside the road that encircles the mall? Because from my experience, all the lots inside it are completely packed, and I think we might want to stretch out. Just a suggestion.

Let's here it from other DC area folk! (somehow, I don't think MiloDC will attend, was he ever happy with his player?)

Sorry for this brief interruption of service...

Speaking of Washington DC, I'm looking to hire a senior level Networking and Security engineer in that area. If you know anyone with that criteria, please forward the resume to me at [email protected].

Now back to your regularly scheduled programs...

Hmm, good thought. I'll go check out the area as soon as I can, but as I recall, there are areas around it that we could use. Course, from the response so far, I'm not certain how much space we'll really need!

Christ man, do you keep that rearend that stocked all the time?! You are ready for war!!! The only thing i keep in my trunk for preparedness is a skateboard helmet so i don't get chased off the public parks when the cops roll by!

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 08/06/2001 23:01

hehe... yeah, i'm kinda ready for anything much of the time. i didn't even go into detail on my mini-page there about the clothes under the other rear seat and the snack food and bottled water that's almost always in my center console.

(there's also often a suit or at least some business-style clothes hangin in the back on a garment hook along with a pair of dress shoes below them.)

this all really stems from the fact that i tend to sort of not make it home 100% of the time. at least three times a week i'll be running here and there and the next thing i know i'm 50 miles away from home and it's 3 AM and i'll either crash in my truck, in someone's bed, or on someone's floor... with the knowledge that come the morning it's likely i'll have some frantic call from any number of my moronic consulting clients. come morning, i suit up and hit the road to wherever (trying to drag details out of the client while i'm on my way either up or down the NJ or PA turnpike). i'm usualy lucky enough to make it home by noon.

as for the WWIII preparedness kit in the trunk, well... let's just say i don't let life throw me curve balls that often. that, plus the fact that i like being a roadside good samaritan.

BTW, i have to say... you car is sweet lookin... i like the PS1/PS2 systems in the vehicle. are you coming to the DC-area get together? if so, i say count me in on any number of games where i'm sure you'll kick my ass (not much of a console game player, 'cept for MarioKart 64 back in college when all my friends and i got -uhm - elevated and played it for days on end instead of going to class.)

ok, it's 2 AM and i'm typing this on a laptop connected to the 'Net with a Sprint phone by the side of a lake in some township park. heh, i think maybe i've typed enough. i wonder how long ago i had a normal sleep cycle.

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 09/06/2001 04:39

In order to be a roadside samaritan, you most certainly need at least a 3-gallon explosion-proof can of gas. (To be an ultra-serious samaritan, you need some diesel fuel as well... ) Really, in the days when I drove Citroen 2CV with inoperable instruments (any instruments), so the only way to estimate the qantity of fuel left was calendar or tapping the tank and therefore spare fuel was a must, I was rescuing about one stranded fuel-starved driver a month.

I see you prefer candles to those sticks with 'firefly extract' (luciferine and luciferase, IIRC). How about signal flares and emergency homing beacon? On the other hand, one does not get that lost on NJ turnpike, does one? Those are more for Doug .

Are you not slightly anxious driving around with a bottle of LOX?

Speaking of roadside assistance, I'm watching some pretty incredable news right now in Houston, Texas. We're having some of the biggest floding we've had in years. The had some footage of some guys in a suburban drive up of one underwater area, unstrap a canoe from the roof of their car, and start ferrying people out of second floor windows of this apartment complex. Now that's roadside assistance.

Our bayous are overflowing like 6 feet above normal level, and entire sections of major freeways are underwater. There was this awesome shot earlier of some 18 wheelers that were literally being swept down Interstate 10 in the current. You could only see the tops of them, but you could tell when they would hit submerged cars and guardrails and the like. Luckily my area wasn't hit too hard. Our power only flickered a few times (UPSs rule!) and although our area got 14" of rain (35.5 cm) it never got more than a few inches high in my street.

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 09/06/2001 13:07

yeh, that is funny that i'll drive arond with the Liquid O2 but i took OUT the gas cans i used to have.

essentially, they were kinda crappy... and with the windows rolled up for a while i could smell a slight odor of gasoline. but you're right... i did have them and they came in handy lots of times for other people (and once for me.) i may have a siphon pump somewhere in one of the tool boxes.

those glow sticks would be a kinda good idea... right now i just have an assortment of maglite flashlights. (i keep them for both illumination and defense purposes =)

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 09/06/2001 22:05

Well, I dunno if I'll be able to be there. I might be accepting a position at a company that will have me out from June 25th - August 25th in Dublin, Ireland for training, so obviously I would not be able to make it. :/

Unexpected, but we'll see how things pan out.

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 10/06/2001 03:44

I saw the footage from Houstom this morning on CNN. Looks quite cataclysmic with almost a meter of precipitation in two or three days. I've heard there is even a causalty, in the dowtown office building, no less...

I tend to forget that southern USA is in for all practical purposes in tropics. Texas Gulf coast is further south then, say, most of Morocco (and some 15 deg to the south of Zagreb).

Good luck down there!

True, but oddly enough, they had a horrible drought there last summer

Yup, the Houston floods were something else. My car is now dead and at the shop waiting for a mechanic to see just precisely how damaged my car is. My EMPEG, however, is sitting high and dry next to my home stereo.

I took some pretty cool pictures on Saturday. Assuming our Web server at work is back up again (it seems to be down right now), you can check them out here:

Re: Washington DC Empeg Get together - 11/06/2001 09:33

Wow, great pictures DWallach. I talked to some of my family from back home (Baton Rouge, LA) and they were giving me the run down of some of the bad spots on I-10 being a few feet underwater. LSU closed for a few days, and basically the worst flooding anyone can remember. . . but they didn't get anything as bad as Houston.

Dixieland: I won't be making it to the meet (i live in San Francisco), though i wish i could, i need a cross country road trip vacation sometime soon. Seems like all that's missing in your install and vehicle is an entertainment center!!

That has got to be one of the best proponents for a removeable head unit! Very sorry to hear about the rest of your car, and probably most of your possesions. The pictures looked horrific.
