For those looking for somewhat more interesting stories on this issue, go read the current issue of IEEE Computer.

In particular, you might like my article, "Copy Protection Technology Is Doomed".

Yeah after the "copy protected cds" are distributed, it will take a few weeks for some geek to break the protection and spread the hack across the internet. I always be able to make mp3s of my music with the encoder of my choice, despite what the music companies try to stop me.

That's my plan all along; get all the geeks riled up (rallying the troops, so to speak)... that way I won't have to wait as long for the hack!

Most things are hacked before they come out. There are ways around everything, thankfully.

I think I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the new Michael Jackson CD has some sort of protection on it.

Actually, closer investigation showed that the Michael Jackson CD that was protected was only the radio station promo copies - to try and stop it getting on musc sharing services before it was even released (as usually happens!)

The fact that it's MJ should be protection enough

I have no problem with record companies protecting promo copies. Technically, they are still owned (the actual disk) by the record company. It is a little disturbing that I was able to download the entire Orbital CD 5 or 6 weeks before it came out.

For every group of 5 programmers trying to come up with a "anti-piracy" CD protection scheme, there will be thousands of hackers breaking it.

This has been discussed to death on this forum (it would be interesting to see stats on how often one of these "the sky is falling for digital audio" threads is started here) :)

There will never be a time when you will not be able to make digital copies of your own legally bought music. And there will never be a time when you will not be able to go download the latest Michael Jackson album 1-2 months before it comes out, if you know where to look.

Not that I advocate that, of course. [the buying of Michael Jackson albums ;) ]

Oops. It worked fine for me, but that's probably because my employer pays the IEEE buckets of money for unlimited access to their magazines. Here's a local copy.
