empegbbs.com - 07/06/2002 21:15

I am addicted to IE's 'ctrl + enter' URL shortcut. It's the main reason I can't go back to Netscape. So, I bought the domain that will make getting to the BBS on a foreign computer faster. Just letting others know!

www.empegbbs.com

PS - CTRL+ENTER Adds "www." to the beginning and ".com" to the end of the text typed in the Address bar.

Using mozilla, I just type in the word and hit enter, it'll auto-add "www." ".com" if needed...and if I hit ctrl-enter, it opens it up in a new tab.

yeah, I have used mozilla and accidentally hit ctrl+enter a couple times. hitting ctrl seems to do nothing, but I did get to where I'm going anyway. The thing is, it takes a few seconds to start downloading the proper url. I don't pay for DSL to wait a few seconds to start loading an url. Yes, I know that sounds assinine but it bothers me. On IE it's instant gratification.

FWIW, I heard Netscape was the original browser with the ctrl+enter shortcut in the version 3 days. But, it was removed because they thought it put too much emphasis on having a .com domain name.

Netscape went to this "Internet Keyword" thing, which would take you to a site if you typed in its keyword, kinda like AOL(hmmm).

For ctrl-enter to work, you have to have it enabled in preferences for it to open in a new tab...Tabbed browsing is nice, but you do have to re-learn now to browse...

Boy, it's interesting how it doesn't work from the Ctrl-L dialog box, even though it definitely does if I click in the Address toolbar manually. Apparently, Microsloth only found that to be useful if you were wasting time by moving your mouse about.

alt+d gets me to the address bar without moving the mouse.

Dude, that's cool. Great domain name. Wonder if we should advertise that name instead of the comms.net name?

I think we might as well. I'm glad you guys enjoy it. I was surprised it was available.

Too cool!!! It even works when I just type empegbbs into the address bar on Nutscrape 4.79 for Solaris, (one of the most unstable programs I have used in ages...)

If you turn off that keyword crap in netscape 4 then it will auto-add www and .com to anything that doesn't already have a TLD (like .com, .net, .edu, .org, etc) without the delay.

There's only 2 reasons I don't use NS 4 anymore: it doesn't render CSS properly (minor), and it locks up a lot (major). Now I use k-meleon
(kmeleon.sourceforge.net) mostly because I don't like IE or Mozilla. The fact that I contributed about half the code also slightly influences my choice

I prefer to use Mozilla over IE for bandwith saving features like right clicking an ad banner to get "block images from this server" and as talked about by someone else, the popup killer. Sure I could use junkbuster, but I browse from too many different locations and systems to make a central install of it easy. The Mozilla profile just follws my roaming profile.

Fine. Now that's another shortcut I have to remember.
