Software DVD Player - 24/07/2002 16:06

Does anyone know of a good software DVD player, preferably free?

I've not tried it personally but the VideoLAN project apparently supports Win32 and DVD playback. No idea if it's got it's own DVD codec built in though.

It does. The last time I used it under Windows, however, it was just kinda okay. Other commercial ones work better. PowerDVD and WinDVD are probably the most prominent.

The latest version of the videolan client came out last week (July 10th) and fixes a bunch of things, but it works quite well now. It is also region free which most of the other aren't. I can't imagine french students only playing region 1 encoded DVDs can you.

Whichever DVD player you end up getting, be sure to check out Zoomplayer (www.inmatrix.com). ZP is a front-end UI that will use just about any of the available DirectX filters...ie it doesn't include codecs of it's own. But it is without doubt the most flexible UI there is. And free.

This all came out of my ATI DVD player not working. I eventually found some DVD player on my system that works fine and does what I need to do, which is play DVDs. It had a very slight cliping of the sound, but I think that may have been do to me trying to open the ATI DVD player earlier and having it never open. I'll try it again and see if it's smoother.

I need a new video card...
