Magellan MapSend Europe Streets? - 06/05/2003 15:36

Okay, Has anyone got a copy of this software -- Magellan MapSend Europe Streets?

I'm interested in some details about how useful / reliable it is -- All that I know so far is what one can read from the package itself (pretty useless, that).

Cheers

I've got Magellan Mapsend Topo for the US.
It works pretty well. It definitely adds lots more info to the GPS's onboard DB. I find it pretty useful and accurate. Adding the maps to my Meridian Marine using a 128MB SD card and reader is easy and fast. The Meridian loads the maps quick too.

Probably not the info you were looking for though, figured I'd throw it out there anyway.
Just my .02 cents US.

Yeah, I have TopoUSA here too, and it's very handy when I'm exploring Utah or the California desert areas. And the MapSend Canada CD-ROM is even more impressive -- no topo lines, but it has pretty much EVERY street anywhere in Canada on it, as of a year ago. The tiniest streets in the tiniest towns.

I'm hoping that MapSend Europe might be of similar quality to the Canada one, at least for the countries covered by it -- which happen to include all of the ones scheduled on my Empeg EuroTour 2003 this summer.

Mmm.. seems way overpriced up here, though -- CAD$195 delivered. I see it at many places in the USA for US$100+delivery. Might have to find a volunteer to buy it down there and mail it to me.

Mmm.. yes, I saw it for those prices on the USA only Amazon site. But I think to get the rebate one must also purchase a new GPSr. I kinda like the one I have already, and don't really need another one!

Oh, wait.. my mistake.

Looks like a $25 rebate on the software alone, and $50 on a GPSr, and $75 combined. Wow!

Mmm...

In reply to:

Except for my town... the road into town was moved about 6 years ago... it's still in the old location on their maps. Also my street (about 4 years old) isn't on there. Most of the other streets in town (Population 700) are also non-existant. However, old woods roads that I didn't even know existed are on there... time for some fun exploring on my dirt bike!

P.S. The Magellan Meridian Gold is a very nice GPS! Especially when combined with Mapsend S&D Canada.

I called gpscentral.ca and spoke to the lady working there (very knowledgable). She fired up the software I was interested in (MS S&D Canada) and found where I lived and read out some of the items in the local area... I was quite impressed... more detail then any other map I had ever seen (though still lacking somewhat for my particular are, but I am kinda in the boonies).

Maybe she would be willing to run the European version for you to give you her impression of that. If you had a paper map then you could compare to what she is telling you on the phone. 1-800-585-933. The guy working there is Ian. Can't quite remember her name though... seems like a Mom and Pop type of GPS store... very friendly.

Hmmm.. yeah. For the Canada CD, I just looked at the samples on gpscentral.ca and ordered it. Great disc.

For the Europe Streets, another BBSer is buying a copy on my behalf from Amazon, and then remailing it to me. I figure it'll be good enough for London, Cambridge, Amsterdam, Paris, and maybe bits of the German/Swiss alps if I'm lucky.

I already have the European basemap for my Magellan (those are downloadable from the web, with neutral non-acknowledgement (don't ask, don't tell) by Magellan.
