Empeg alternative? - 07/05/2003 08:39
Has anyone seen
this new mini-itx box? It could make a SWEET little mp3 player. It can run a full install of any x86 compatible OS.

I think Tony posted a
link a little while back. Yes, they do look nice, but I was thinking about them more for a tiny dedicated MAME box...

...in the car.
Wow. The perils of playing "Pole Position", "Ironman Ivan Stewart's Off Road", or "Demolition Derby" on said equipment cannot be overestimated.

Spy Hunter - definitely Spy Hunter.

Tempting, but Spy Hunter is just too hard to play in my current MAME configuration.

It's not too difficult to play in the car though - with or without a mame box!

While driving to work some days, I often look around, wishing I saw a "Weapons Van" up ahead...

LOL. Of course, I meant for the passengers in the car.

Your crew on strike or something? I see mine every morning, but for some reason they are always out of ammo.

So does this thing have standard VGA output? The spec sheet doesn't list it, but the photos show something that really looks like VGA out.
So, here's what I'm thinking: I've got this huge mp3 collection (310GB -- 256kbit fixed) on a linux server. All the drives, power supply, etc make a hell of a lot of noise. I can get one of these silent things and NFS mount the mp3 directory from the loud server in another room. Cool!
I've never installed my own OS on a flash. Is it a big deal? Does it work like any other partition? For my current home player configuration I would need: NFS client, ncurses, and good sound support in linux.
Very cool indeed!

Are you talking about using it to stream to your home stereo? If so, a cheaper and much more elegant solution might be
this. But maybe I'm just not following you.

suomi35 has also been recently working on getting that to work with the empeg itself as the device between his linux server and his home stereo. See
here and
