Duke is about as far from poverty-ridden as you're likely to find in the US, both faculty-, student-, and organization-wise.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did it to point the students down the DRM path, to limit University liability. One ugly lawsuit could cost more than the cost of the program.

The Register has been covering RIAA shakedowns of universities for a while now, with some cynicism.

Not that the program is actually costing them anything...I'm sure it's passed on to the students through tuition or technology fees.

The $300 or however much they're getting iPods in bulk for is nothing compared to the 4-year tuition of about $114,000.

On the flipside, if you're a resident, you can attend the local state university (SC) for $21,600 (£11,673.15) over four years, and even less if you get some scholarships or government grants.

Well, that's a private school and probably one of the most expensive ones at that. I went to NCSU, which is a public university (meaning supported, partially, anyway, by government funds) for much less. Right now, in-state tuition is $15,000 for 4 years. Wow. It's gone up quite a lot. When I went (1991-?) it was like $500 a semester for a full load for in-state students.

That's more like it. I managed to get into university before tuition fees came in. Still payed for accomodation, food, getting pissed, etc.

It's even higher than that according to their website. Over $17,000.

Old South usage. My dad used to use it that way all the time. Not really correct usage. I think at some point it could have been considered to have been. I'll check the OED when I get home, not that they lend much credence to US usage, much less the Deep South.

It depends entirely on the student. As Bitt pointed out, most students go to substantially cheaper shools. For those who go to the pricey schools, however, very few actually pay the list price. Such schools, particularly those with large endowments, tend to pay out a variety of different scholarships, both "merit-based" and "need-based". The people who aren't elgible for any of that usually get by with some combination of part-time work and massive debt accumulation. The loans often come from the university and (I believe) are below market rates. At one point, I believe Princeton had made enough of a killing in the stock market that they unilaterally decided to forgive loans for many of their students (although I can't seem to find any mention of this on Google, but I seem recall it happening). Likewise, I'm aware of similar programs for law students. A NYU law student friend of mine was able to go into public interest work, being paid far less than somebody makes at a law firm, and an anonymous NYU donor made her loan payments while she was doing the public interest work.

There's also the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition. William & Mary, for instance, cost me around $10,000 the first year I was there (different housing situations after that). For people out of state, most paid over $22,000 a year. What's even better (for me) is that over the time I was there, the in-state tuition was frozen, while out of state rose every year.

Yes, but then you must suffer through the basketball season. Going to Chapel Hill is the alternate (and best) option.

I went to a private school, and while not nearly as much as all that, it still wasn't cheap. Just about everyone there had a scholarship of some kind. I somehow wrangled a full tuition scholarship, while my wife went on a combination of scholarships and school loans (which we're still- and will be for a long time- paying off).

I went to a school whose tuition bill for 4 1/4 years (I did a 5 year dual degree program _really_ quickly) came to about $140,000 (tuition & room - not books nor food).

Most everyone I knew had (still has) loans. My parents saved for years to pay for my & my brother's college (approx the same price). I graduated in 1993. I knew one girl who had to leave school as her parents couldn't make tuition or the loans and she didn't qualify for aid. I think she ended up at a state school (tuition approx. $25,000 for 4 years). There are plenty of people who have to pay the full sticker price for good education.
