...and it still doesn't support hierarchical playlists. Instead, they've added "playlist folders" which can contain playlists, but not tracks. The "search bar" is a step backward too, if you ask me. Color me unimpressed.

Download here.

Being that the only iPod I own is a shuffle, can someone else answer if this new "folder" thing gets synced to an iPod? While the folders can't hold tunes, they can hold playlists and folders, allowing a somewhat odd hierarchy.

Smart Playlists now know about podcasts, so I can finally have auto podcast syncing to my Shuffle.

The new look, I think was more of a way to show not much has really actually been added to justify the 5 version, but they ran out of 4.x versions.

Somewhere I missed the iPod nano. Is it just the next iteration of the iPod mini?

Re: iTunes 5 is out... - 07/09/2005 19:22

Yes. The iPod Nano is the replacement for the Mini. It uses flash chips from Samsung to get the 2 and 4gb sizes. Samsung is aparently offering Apple a great deal on the chips.

I'm actually tempted by the Nano, as my biggest complaint with the Shuffle is the lack of a screen. It's not a big deal on the motorcycle (where I need a flash based player since hard drives don't like the 5-7k rpm vibrations of my motor), but I have been using the Shuffle a lot for Podcast playback in the car, instead of bringing the empeg inside to sync podcasts to.

They also released the Motorola ROKR phone. It's not very attractive, holds 100 songs, and has no memory expansion. No thanks.

I'm rather suprised by the nano. It's a very nice device.

Re: iTunes 5 is out... - 07/09/2005 19:52

Yup, the ROKR seems like a real let down. I'd love to see apple's interpretation of a RAZR, for instance. What I have no use for is a plastic brick that plays DRM encumbered AAC's. The damn thing meets all my requirements(gsm850, edge, bluetooth) but it has nothing to make it desireable beyond those features that are checkboxes for me.

This would have been the perfect launch event for Apple to launch bluetooth headphones that pair with the ROKR and your mac, let take cell phone calls, let you ichat and listen to itunes. Beoynd the obvious, wouldn't it be cool if the phone took over playing the music as you left the coverage area of your computer? It's all possible, but instead apple chose to liscense out their DRM to Motorola and apperently gains nothing but cash.

I've become one of those "Mac people". I refreshed my Apple.com tab every minute while the press conference was happening. I ordered a black 4 GB nano immediately after it was available on the site. And I mean immediate. Since they already have all my account info the order was completed in about 15 seconds. So that makes the maximum delta 00:01:15 from availability until my order.

Where oh where did I go wrong? I make fun of people like me.

I don't think the ROKR has EDGE. It looks like it is a rebadged E398. It does have a transflash slot for more memory, though. Also, it looks like the bluetooth doesn't support stereo headsets.

Yup, it turns out it does have a slot for more memory. Guess what, you can't use it for music. Until someone hacks this thing, it was actually Apple that chose to limit you to 100 tracks. They apparently only wanted 25, but Motorola bargained up to 100.

Too bad Nokia couldn't have teamed up with Apple using this phone....

Nokia N91

oh well.. the price tag is likely to be a tad high anyway.

I don't "get" the new Motorola/Apple mobile phone/mp3 player.

It's big and it doesn't do anything my Nokia 6230 does.

Hardly a revelation

Huh, something I read yesterday said it had edge, though it certainly wasn't anything official. It also said that you could use bluetooth headsets for calls but not for listening to music. (which actually makes sense if you've tried listening to music through a bluetooth headset). The bluetooth headphone profile is different from the headset/handsfree profile, and does support (semi?)decent audio.

Yeah, but they'll sell enough of 'em.

Apple cranks up the DRM straightjacket a little more for the phone:

What is the point of limiting the number of tracks ?

we got them where i work today...they are not as big as i thought they would be....

Well, they don't look large, but that doesn't mean they look good.

And I don't have an answer as to why they would possibly limit the number of tracks. It honestly makes no sense. I'm sure they have a reason, but it couldn't possibly be a satisfactory one.

Re: iTunes 5 is out... - 09/09/2005 00:35

no..i never said they look good.....but i guess i never saw the phone in person that it was based on that came out over a year ago....my guess is that they are limiting it to not compete with ipods since they won't profit nearly as much from the motorola phone....maybe it is something to get awareness out while Apple works on their own phone (which I hope they don't.)

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you said anything. You're right, it is pretty small.

That's what folks are saying. Some are saying that it'll even have the wheel on it.

Re: iTunes 5 is out... - 09/09/2005 06:43

The ironic part to the limitation is that it only applies to the iTunes part of the phone. If you put normal MP3 files on the phones memory, and use the built in java media player that other Motorola phones also have, it has no limitation.

The iTunes synced songs also can not be used as ringtones. Seems odd, considering I am sure most people would want to do so.

The rumors say Apple wanted the number at 25 initially. Again, noone is sure why, beyond trying to avoid impacting iPod Shuffle sales. And of course, noone external to Apple knows how Shuffle sales are doing, as they only release a sales number covering the entire iPod family.

Here's a funny take on the questionable at best aesthetics of iTunes 5.

Oh, and for those who use mt-daapd (as I do) it just so happens iTunes 5 and mt-daapd don't play nice. An iTunes 5-friendly version is available at http://nightlies.mt-daapd.org/. Unfortunately, the fix isn't available for the nightly builds with the extra features like server-side conversion.

I always hated the brushed metal shit. Now they've got yet another HIG-flaunting piece of shit?

The answer is no sadly. The iPod just ignores the folder structure and syncs the underlying playlists as a flat layout.

The iPod Nano does support the display of lyrics though, but only as something you manually scroll through. I'll have to find some tools to add the non time coded lyrics to songs now.

Necropost!

Apple just e-mailed me offering to replace this Nano. Seems the battery problem is getting worse with age, and they are now replacing every one out in the field. If you have one, (and didn't get the e-mail due to not being registered or it changed), you can head here. https://supportform.apple.com/201110/

What are they replacing them with?

After 6 years...I'd say that's pretty good service.

Re: Bad Nano - 12/11/2011 13:32

Not every 1st gen Nano is covered, mine isn't frown Granted I had to dig it out to check the serial number, so it is not as if it is in use...so no great lose to me.

edit
Anyone want a 1st gen iPod Nano that does not hold a charge?

Re: Bad Nano - 12/11/2011 22:18

Turns out my iPod nano is a 2nd-gen model. It normally spends all its time sitting in the Audi's poor excuse for an integrated connection (your first five playlists are presented as virtual CDs in a CD changer with the sixth CD being the entire contents of the iPod).

I'm not sure what I'd do with a replacement. Probably sell it and use the money on something else.
