headphones for jogging?

headphones for jogging? - 30/09/2006 19:18

I know we've had a large number of headphone-related threads over the years, and I've been reading all of them over, but the focus tends to be on audiophile solutions, with a consensus recommendation on the in-ear earplug variety (made variously by Sony, Sennheiser, and Etymotic). There have also been several honorable mentions for Grado Labs.

What I'm looking for, and which I haven't seen much discussion of, are headphones appropriate for jogging and/or working out. That means sound quality takes second fiddle ot other issues, like sweat and things tugging on your ears. I've got my default iPod headphones, which are vaguely okay, but you still get some snapping of the cord on your ears as you're running along. I'm curious if this gets any better with any of the headband models or clip-around-the-ear models? There's such a large variety and no obvious way to figure out what's better or worse than anything else.

Thoughts?

I once walked -- not even jogged -- to work wearing Etymotics and it was terrifying: I couldn't hear cars that were right next to me. Don't get in-ear ones for jogging.

When I was at Uni there was a music student who used to walk across campus wearing DT100's with his minidisc player.

The sound quality is good, although I'd go for 250's, you wouldn't look nearly as much of a tit walking down the high street....

I'm ashamed to admit that I used to walk around Sheffield Uni with a large pair of Sennheisers on my head. I must have looked a complete berk...

I bought a new Sony PSYC D-EJ100 CD Walkman many moons ago which came with these earphones:

They would be absolutely perfect for jogging and jumping around. I'm sure they would fit anyones ears as they don't rely on filling your ears to stay in place. The actual part that goes in the ear is not a tight fit so they are absolutely painless to wear. It would be impossible for them to fall out of your ears, yet if you pulled the cord hard they would pop out in an extremely ear-friendly way as the behind the ear part has just the right amount of flexibility.

Because they don't seal up around your ears you can hear everything around you quite well. They leak sound quite a lot as you would imagine, so not a pair for the train. The sound quality is borderline acceptable.

I have a pair of these. Perfect for jogging and motorcycling. Not sure that's the kind of thing you're looking for though.

How well do they fit inside a helmet? Do you use a jet helmet or a full-face?

Philips make a very similar thing to the one in Sein's photo, and I have a pair, which I haven't used in 5 years, I shortened the cable for convenience, if you send me an address by PM, I'll mail them to you: If ever we meet, you can buy me a pint!

Skullcap. Mainly for cruising on Sundays. Full helmet with no earphones any other time. Especially at night.
