Ixus 400 dead. Replace it?

Ixus 400 dead. Replace it? - 08/08/2007 13:03

We went to a wedding on Monday. My camera (a Canon Ixus 400) kept telling me "Memory card error". Tried a couple of different cards, tried a couple of different batteries. Same error. Tried formatting the cards. It showed 3.4Mb capacity, despite the cards being 256Mb and 512Mb. Gave error "E500", if I recall correctly.

Probably need new camera.

Recommendations?

If you want to have a go at fixing the camera then this thread looks interesting:

It could be either a bent pin, or needs the internal battery removed - there is also something about Canon USA fixing camera for free, even those out of warranty, not sure about UK though.

Karen's new Ixus 850IS is very nice. It does cool stuff like using face recognition to drive the spot-focus, so if you're in a target-rich environment your friends' faces get focused-on even if other objects in view are larger or closer.

Probably not that -- I thought of that, because I managed to bend a pin in my USB reader thingy a week or so ago.

Hmm. I'll take a look at that. Presumably that means dismantling the camera. Bugger.

These are supposed to be excellent:

Not sure about the IXUS 400 but I've taken an IXUS 300 apart and it wasn't too bad. There are some guides floating around on the internet to say how to dismantle it. The guides are actually to show you how to fix the problem with the lens assembly getting jammed.

You just need really small screwdrivers. Don't think there was anything special I needed.

Yup, reading through that thread, it really sounds likely that the internal CMOS battery has finally run down. Should be simple enough to replace it yourself.

My newer Canon digicam has easier access to that battery, from inside the main battery hatch, just like with my DSLR.

Try bringing this with you to the PLASA show tomorrow and handing it to Patrick - he has fixed a number of 400's with this exact problem recently.

It's working fine again now, so I'll have to put off getting a DSLR for a while longer...

Well, should it die again, my Canon 20D DSLR will be up for sale shortly, likely for around 200 quid or so.
