Does the Empeg do some basic verifications on the database3, playlists, and tags before deciding to return them to you? I attempted to load someone else's on my Empeg (obviously my tunes didn't match, but I was hoping I could fool it just for the db download) but when I did, it basically returned a file not found when I request the tag database. The files appear to be valid formats, but they just don't match my player.

Yes. It's the Empeg's little cry for help if it feels it needs its database rebuilt. It checks at least that the highest fid in use is correct, possibly more than that.

Yup. When I turn on Hijack's filesystem tracing, the player is observed to be perusing the fids directories at startup.. presumably to validate it's database, and/or to predetermine which FIDS subdirs already exist, if any.
