maybe you should pad the nipple

Padding would only be useful if the nipple broke from striking something. I don't believe that it's striking anything when it breaks from a drop, I think it's just the sudden deceleration and the angle of the G forces. I fear that adding additional "stuff" around the nipple would increase its chances of breaking rather than decreasing them.
