Isolation of population / language groups. Very likely. They evolve differently. Just as dialects evolve. The average person does not really travel across the continent often enough to change speech patterns, so you still hear regional differences (i.e., New York, Southern, etc.). As the population travels more widely, the dialects are fewer and spread over a wider area.

And modern telecommunications has made some interesting changes to language as well.
