on a more serious thought what is stop you getting a cd player with a digital out and ripping it that way. If it works in the cd player that is.

This works as a way to get around some of the protection schemes, true. But some of the schemes can even mess up the digital out. I can't explain the details because I don't understand them. Andy's CDR FAQ explains them (but when I linked his site earlier today it seemed to be down, dunno what its status is).
