Does anybody have 4x6 speakers that they are happy with? I am looking for something to replace the Polk EX462s that I currently have in the front of my Jeep. The Polks have decent sound quality, but are not nearly loud enough (jeeps are f**ing loud). The speaker mounting location sucks (about half way down the dash facing slightly downward with about 20% of the speaker obscured by dash plastics) which does not help. The amp I am currently using is a MTX Thunder 204 (25w x 4).

Search the forum archives at www.carsound.com to see what other people have used with that car. I don't know which parts of the speakers get obscured, but you could also make use of 4" models with mounting plate (I know JL sells them like this).

Good luck.

Hmm, that forum seems to be down yesterday and today. Anyway, I think I am going to go with Infinity Kappas as they seem to be one of the few higher end manufacturers that make a 4x6.

I liked my Boston 746s in my GMC trucks (Typhoon and Sonoma), but I no longer use them since they don't fit in my current car.

I went with the Kappas and I'm pretty happy with them so far. They can handle a lot of power. I think I paid $64 + 16 shipping online. I thought the site was audiomyth.com but maybe not.

Anyway, you should be able to find them for around that price.

You say that your polks aren't loud enough. Replacing your speakers, even if you get ones that are a little bit more efficient, isn't going to make a very big difference in volume. I would suggest getting a more powerful amp.

There are soundbars for jeeps which provide a place to mount speakers above your head. They mount to the roll bar. With speakers this close to your head, you would be able to hear them even with all the wind noise. There are also special speaker enclosures that mount inbetween the roll bar and the rear fenders that direct the speakers toward the front. A website that sells both of these is www.4wd.com

You managed to resurrect a rather old thread :-)

Actually, my amp had plenty of power but my speakers couldn't handle it and would distort if I increased the gains on the amp. The polks where only rated to 35watts I believe and the kappas I ended up replacing them where rated for more like 85. Even though the MTX amp I am using is only rated at 25watts, the gains are still pretty low with the kappas and I don't get the distortion.

For some reason MTX amps seem to be underrated. The birth certificate for the one that drives my subs shows it putting out nearly twice the wattage ratted on the box.

There are soundbars for jeeps

Yeah, I have the stock sound bar with a pair of 5 1/2 inch polks in it. You are right that it puts out plenty of volume, but the sound location is terrible. The sound stage is supposed to be in front of you, not directly over your head I have the gains on those speakers almost all the way down so that they don't overpower the dash, they just provide a little fill and mid-base.

There are also special speaker enclosures that mount inbetween the roll bar and the rear fenders

I have seen these to, they don't work well because all the sound is blocked by the seats. There is a company selling kick panel speaker pods for jeeps now too, but they look like they would be pretty easy to steal and I prefer to keep everything looking as factory as possible.

accully mtx are rated correctly, not over rated as so many other amps, but the thing with the lower end mtx amps, is the amps themself distort before the speakers do, thats why u need to turn the gains down.

I used to have a '97 TJ and I had the Polk "dB" component plate 4x6 in the factory locations. I ran 2x50 to the front and 2x60 to Polk dB3065 in the soundbar (I "adjusted" the holes to fit the 6 1/2"). This was plenty loud. I must admit the 200 watt Polk dB 10" in the add-a-trunk didn't hurt, but the sound level should be very loud without it. You might try mounting some tweeter separates higher on the dash. The higher frequencies should improve your soundstage, but you may not want to draw attention.

Have you modified your Jeep for off-roading?

Jeez, this thread just keeps coming back! I started it almost a year and a half ago.

I used to have a '97 TJ

What happened to it?

Anyway, I am happy with my current setup with the infinity kappas in the front, polks overhead, and two JLAudio 8s under the back seat.

Have you modified your Jeep for off-roading?

I have done some minor mods (nerfs, tow hooks, etc). The big mods actually come this monday when I am getting a 3 inch lift and 33x12.5 tires, I'll be regearing soon too. I have been waiting for the right time for all that for two years now. I am pretty excited to finally get it done.

I got some used boston pro 4.1 components and installed the 4" speaks in the front "holes". I used some creative coat hangers to get the speakers to mount and angled the upwards as much as possible. I installed the tweeters in the lower corners of the windshield.

Boston Pro 5.1's in the sound bar turned down a bit (they were from another install, otherwise I wouldn't have installed such nice speakers in the "rear"). 8" 2ohm (whoops) kicker solobaric in the refabricated factory subwoofer cutout.

Total power are two old rockford fosgate kidney bean amps. A 4040 (4x20) wired in stereo for the fronts and bridged to the rears (the rears are wired in serial to give less rear stereo separation) and a punch 60ix (2x30) for the sub coming from the combined output from the 4040.
