First, I was wondering if GPSapp had an memory requirements, in relation to the empeg? Specifically, will it run on a MKIIa? The only non-standard thing I have taking up memory is whatever extra ext3 stuff takes up, which I could part with.

Also, I was looking for a cheap GPS receiver similar to the Garmin GPS35PC. The cheapest I've found it for is $150, which seems high when you can get a receiver with an LCD for less. Anyone know of a cheap reciever that works that comes with RS-232 pre-wired?

It doesn't take much memory, I ran it on a mk2a with ext3 and a few other things running for a while. As far as a cheap GPS, I'm sure there are cheaper ones than the one you found out there. If you happen to want a good one, I've got a GPS16 that I should really sell. It was installed for a year or so for use with GPSapp and worked fine. I think I paid around $200 for it.
