I just got an e-mail from a girl I briefly dated nine years ago and haven't seen or heard from since then. She's apparently divorced and now engaged again. I'm married with a kid on the way. Clearly, there's nothing romantic any more, but it still feels weird. Variations on this theme seem to happen about once a year to me, and I've never really had a good handle on what to do or how I'm supposed to feel about it. Anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

i've had it happen...though not quite after such a long period of time. sometimes it's just a friendly attempt to keep in contact. sometimes it's an attempt to check up on you to see if your life is as miserable as hers so she doesn't feel so bad about her situation. other possibilities could be she may be trying to rekindle old feelings. there really are many different possible reasons. i'd say your safest bet is to see it as a friend dropping a line to see how you're doing. but you have to be careful what you say...because wifey could find out and not like your choice of words or the idea of you talking to her

So the Ray Charles/Nora Jones song, Here We Go Again, doesn't apply in this situation?

Time to rent High Fidelity again? You could reccomend it to her, though she might take it the wrong(right) way.

Nine years, eh?

Last Saturday I received a phone call from someone I dated 40 years ago. As it turns out, neither of us is currently in a relationship, and...

No further details will be forthcoming here.

Now there is a closing sentence that almost begs for a "To Be Continued"...

I pretty much get this from all my exes (minus two notable ones)

It used to be fun and exciting when I was between girlfriends, now it's just friendly.

All good, though - as long as you have a wife who deos not believe in jealousy.

Wise woman!...it's a truly fruitless emotion; either there is something to be jealous about or there isn't; either there's trust or there isn't, and in the instant, very little you can do about either...but then, since when were emotions sensible?
