Thanks for the info. Sounds like there are lots of reasons NOT to update my Galaxy Nexus to 4.4 if/when it ever becomes available:
It won't be officially coming to the Galaxy Nexus. There is a petition circulating asking Google to change their mind.
Choose a new launcher from the Play Store that doesn't have this integration. The AOSP launcher for 4.4 is nearly identical to 4.3's stock launcher. The launcher that ships with the Nexus 5 is not part of AOSP. It's a Google launcher that will apparently be coming to the Play Store if you would like to install it on your non-Nexus device.

The N5 sounds like a nice device, though!
It is. I was using my backup Galaxy Nexus the past 4 weeks while waiting for the Nexus 5 to be released. Those two devices are worlds apart.
