I did a bit more digging and it appears as if the NAS must do the indexing for Spotlight if this Apple discussion post is correct. That does not seem to be happening by any NAS vendors at the moment.
Anyway, I will leave it for the time being, I am grateful that I can search my NAS via Finder now, which I could not do before. Sorry for the thread hijack.
