I was asked to cross-post this from the Emeg BBS. I went to BestBuy in Danvers, MA this weekend and they had Rio Recievers on Clearance for $149. I am not sure if this is a national clearance of stock but it seemed like a good price to me.

Had a quick look at bestbuy.com but could not find them. Were they Dell branded or actually Rio models ? Certainly the Dell ones were available for a limited time for $149 but looked like supplies dried up. To be honest at $149 they are worth it, once over $250 I am not so sure they are good value.

I'll confirm that. I picked one up at Best Buy two weeks ago at $149 in Minnesota along with just about everyone I could inform about this great deal.

I was just at Danvers and picked up the unit on display for $120. I believe the Rio Receiver is now only available in B&M stores and not online.

If anyone comes across deals on Rio Receivers, please post in this forum. I would like to pick up a couple of more units.

Thanks,

-willryu

I'll second that. Dell spoiled me. I bought 2 for $149 each. I need a 3rd and I'm having a hard time justifying $250.

I just bought one for $149 at Best Buy in Milwaukee, quite a deal off of the entry price; however, I am worried that the product is discontinued and won't have any updates.

Any insights???

Thanks

It's not discontinued and a software update is due in a couple of months.

It's not like it's difficult is it? I mean most european countries are less distance from the UK than one side of america to the other.

Sheesh.

You might want to contact www.borderfree.com. It's a Canadian import service that acts as a purchasing agent for US online shopping, even stores that don't ship outside the USA. They give you a guaranteed price including shipping and duties (if any) to any address in Canada in Canadian dollars. I've used them several times with good success. I even bought my Dell receiver that way when Dell Canada was not offering it.

They announced recently that they would soon be expanding the service to the UK to allow UK shoppers to buy American. I can't remember if they had an eta, but you could contact them for more info.

Actually it's very difficult - there are huge overheads in shipping problems, taxation and fraud. The only practical solution for a large operation is to open a local distribution centre.

Agreed. That was a flippant comment.

I think that the internet just makes the boundaries between countries a lot smaller.

And well, if Rio can't (won't) sell it over here, why should anyone else bother?

Paul.

"Dear Paul Haigh,

Thank you for your interest in Borderfree.

At the present time we are only facilitating cross-border transactions from the U.S. to Canada. The next progression of our service is to be facilitating transactions from the U.S. to the U.K.

We are estimating launching this new service early next year.

Thank you for using Borderfree."

Rio do want to sell it here - they're showing it at IFA in Germany at the moment. European sales have been a bit preoccupied recently due to a restructuring and move of location, but the official line (according to the european sales manager) is that the Receiver is - or will be - available in Europe.

I don't know when.

Sadly, the UK public like to be ripped off (it's the only way I can explain why we put up with high prices), so it'll probably retail for the same price figure in GBP as it does in USD in the states (i.e. if it retails for USD149 in the US, it'll retail for GBP149 here). Then there'll be a higher shipping charge and that's before they even manage to add the VAT on.

Ho hum.

Nicholas (who's still looking for a job if anybody knows of anybody wanting a VMS systems manager on contract ;-)
